VoLTE Roaming Testing, The Key to Successful VoLTE Acceleration

Voice over LTE has been around for quite some time and it’s no longer a stranger to the applicability in roaming either. It’s ability to offer mobile users a heightened experience by delivering high-quality voice services and lower connection times has been a key benefit of the technology. With the continued growth and adoption of 5G, in addition to the move by many global mobile operators to reallocate precious spectrum from legacy networks, VoLTE has suddenly moved back to the top of the priority list.

With this resurgence, a lot more attention is being directed to VoLTE by both operators and the vendors that support them. Syniverse teamed up with the industry experts at Kaleido Intelligence to survey the state of VoLTE roaming in the industry. The conclusions are presented in a White Paper that takes a thorough look at VoLTE implementation strategies that focus on how to launch VoLTE.

This new research discovered some key findings from over one hundred operator respondents including:

  • 96% of responding operators have increased or are transitioning VoLTE roaming into a key operational priority.
  • 100% of the respondents anticipate having VoLTE roaming agreements in place by the end of 2024.
  • 48% plan to enable VoLTE roaming support through interworking to support voice calls while roaming after the sunsetting of 2G or 3G networks.
  • 50% of respondents indicated that they expect to have between 10 and 50 direct VoLTE roaming agreements in three years.

As a solution provider, Syniverse helps operators quickly and easily transition to next generation technologies, such as 5G, by guiding them through critical implementation and testing steps. Syniverse gained a lot of insights from the survey data, confirming our efforts and investments in products designed to help operators both transition to and successfully implement VoLTE roaming.

Two data points that stood out to us were the findings around legacy network retirement and VoLTE roaming testing.

With the migration to 5G, many operators are retiring their legacy 2G and 3G networks, and as a result they are becoming completely reliant on VoLTE services for voice. Syniverse’s Evolved Mobility, helps operators to better mitigate the challenges in supporting operator partners who have yet implemented VoLTE roaming.

Once VoLTE roaming is supported, then there are a few complexities to take on. As a member of Syniverse’s Global Services team I recognize that it takes time and resources to build the expertise internally to address these complexities in network and billing configuration. That’s why we provide end-to-end services that accelerate VoLTE launches through our broad expertise, unmatched global connectivity, testing, and launch processes. Syniverse’s Global Services provides roaming agreement facilitation between partners, including coordination of roaming testing services that comprises network provisioning, IREG/TADIG testing, extensive troubleshooting, and reporting capturing the entire lifecycle of roaming partner engagement to commercial launch.

I encourage you to read through the White Paper “The VoLTE Roaming Journey, When & How to Launch VoLTE Roaming” to gain further insight, knowledge, and beneficial recommendations to help you successfully roll-out VoLTE roaming. From the complementary webinar you can get additional insights, from leading mobile network operators, Kaleido and myself. Should that information lead to thoughts you’d like to discuss with Syniverse, then I’d love to hear from you!
