CSR Snapshot: Syniverse Hong Kong Office Runs 10K for Charity

Synergy’s CSR Snapshot features some of the most recent corporate social responsibility activities that Syniverse has participated in to help make a positive impact on the communities where we live and work.

What was the activity?
On Sept. 17, a team from Syniverse’s Hong Kong office participated in the Captain America 10K run, part of the Marvel 10K Weekend 2017 event, a series of races for different ages and running levels that was held at Hong Kong Disneyland.

What organization did the activity support?
Through the registration fee for the run that was paid for by Syniverse, we raised funds for the Hong Kong Association for Cleft Lip and Palate. This nonprofit is dedicated to increasing public understanding and acceptance of people with cleft lip and palate, improving parents’ knowledge in the care of children with cleft lip and palate, and advocating for improvement in medical services provided to victims of cleft lip and palate. The organization currently supports more than 900 families across Hong Kong, mainland China, Macau and Taiwan.

Our team.

What did the Syniverse team do?
Fifteen employees and family members ran 10 kilometers (approximately six miles) in a course through Hong Kong Disneyland. We joined over 10,000 other runners who took part in the entire Marvel 10K Weekend 2017 two-day event. We had the option to have a part of our registration fee, which was paid by Syniverse, donated to a charity, and we chose the Hong Kong Association for Cleft Lip and Palate. Our team raised a total of over HK$9,300 (approximately US$1,000) for this charity.

What was the single most rewarding part of this activity for you?
There were a few. First, in a similar run we participated in last year, we ran an 8K race, and this year, we upped that to a 10K race, an advancement we’re proud of. Also, it was rewarding to have greater employee interest in and registration for this year’s run. Although some of us aren’t regular runners and we faced a long course on a hot day, we all supported each other, enjoyed the challenge, and had a memorable team-building experience. There were also Disney characters along the race that cheered for all the runners, and stopping to take some photos with them was a lot of fun. But the most rewarding part of this run was being reminded that participating in in-person volunteering events can be so much more powerful and gratifying than just making a monetary donation. Our donations will help provide critical support for children who have had the misfortune to be born with cleft lip or palate. The event was a day of hard work and accomplishment for them, and we look forward to building on this with more runs for charity in the future.
