The biggest event in the mobile industry kicks off in just a few days, and, as usual, Syniverse has a full week of activities planned for Mobile World Congress Barcelona (MWC Barcelona).
Syniverse colleagues from around the globe will be coming to Barcelona to join over 107,000 expected attendees at the show, which this year explores the theme of “Intelligent Connectivity” and how we’ve arrived at a new era of highly contextualized and personalized experiences, delivered when and where we want them.
This theme could hardly be more fitting for Syniverse and our new tagline, “the world’s most connected company,” and we have a full slate of activities for MWC to prove it. For starters, as usual, we’ll have a state-of-the-art booth at Fira Barcelona Gran Via, located at Stand 2G11 in Hall 2, where I hope you can stop by to see me and our team if you’re coming to the show. Our main attraction at our booth will be our Innovation Theater. This education center will feature three and a half days of continuous technology seminars, business case presentations, and product demonstrations on some of the latest technology innovations we’re involved with, like 5G, Rich Communication Services (RCS), and blockchain.

5G Study Announcement
Regarding that last session mentioned, on monetizing 5G, another of our highlights at MWC will be an announcement of new findings on how the mobile industry is preparing for 5G. We’ll be hearing a lot this year about 5G. This once-in-a-decade upgrade will leap ahead of current wireless technology, 4G, by enabling mobile internet speeds that let people download entire movies in seconds and pave the way for a new generation of real-time, automated services using advanced technologies like the internet of things (IoT).
Our new insights examine this by specifically looking at how operators are thinking about the 5G ecosystem payment process and the extent to which they are or are not preparing for this transition. We also look at the opportunities available to operators in overcoming some of 5G’s big challenges, including how they should approach security, universal clearing and settlement between 4G and 5G, and network slicing. 2019 promises to be an exciting year for 5G rollout, and Syniverse is looking forward to playing a central role in it. Industry 4.0 Event
A final highlight will be a panel session on Feb. 27 that our Chief Marketing Officer, Bill Hurley, will be joining: “Can Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet Be as Secure and Reliable as Industry 3.0?” Following the first industrial revolution (mechanization through water and steam power), to the second (mass production and assembly lines using electricity), to the third (adoption of computers and automation), the fourth industrial revolution, or Industry 4.0, promises to improve our industrial operations with smart and autonomous systems that use data and machine learning.
But what are the risks to businesses as they make this transformation? Bill will have keen perspectives to share from his work with some of our customers, and we’ll have a recap of his and the others’ key points following the session.

As Group Vice President of Corporate Development and Strategy, Michael O’Brien is responsible for driving Syniverse’s global strategic planning, developing new avenues for revenue growth, ensuring synergy across different business organizations, and identifying and managing partnerships. Previously, Mike served as Senior Vice President and General Manager of Risk Management and led Syniverse’s global fraud prevention and revenue assurance services, helping service providers control risks related to fraud and security, accurately capture revenues, and prevent revenue leaks. Prior to that, he served as Senior Vice President of Business Development and oversaw Syniverse’s acquisitions, new customer relationships and industry relationships. Earlier, Mike was Vice President of Marketing and responsible for management of all products and services globally, and, before that, served in a number of other senior-level positions in the company, including Marketing Director for North American Wireless Services, Product Manager for Network Monitoring and Loyalty Products, Customer Service Manager, and Manager of Network Operations. He holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Virginia.
