Quick, compliant multilingual communications build trust and keep families informed.

When a school message lands at the right moment, it does more than inform — it builds trust. For educators and administrators, that trust is essential, especially when families speak different languages, rely on mobile phones as their primary connection, and need updates that are clear and timely.

TalkingPoints was built for that reality. As a nonprofit education technology organization, TalkingPoints helps schools communicate with families about classroom progress, attendance, events, and districtwide notifications. Its platform includes translation in more than 150 languages, so caregivers can receive information in the language they prefer. That focus on accessibility has helped drive broad adoption, with one in four United States school districts using TalkingPoints to strengthen home and school engagement.

SMS is at the center of that experience. Text messaging reaches families on virtually any mobile device and does not depend on data plans or home internet. It is also fast. Industry data consistently shows that texts are opened at extremely high rates and read within minutes, which is exactly what schools need when time matters.

But scaling SMS for education brings unique challenges. District and school communications can spike suddenly, and messages often include sensitive information involving minors. On top of that, the messaging ecosystem is shaped by evolving requirements, including FCC rules, carrier codes of conduct, and aggregator vetting processes. Even well-intentioned programs can face delays or delivery issues if campaigns are not structured correctly.

TalkingPoints initially leaned on ten-digit long codes, commonly known as 10DLC, as a practical way to support high-volume day-to-day communication while managing costs. The opportunity was to create a stronger system for urgent outreach, without sacrificing compliance or the nonprofit mission.

Syniverse worked with TalkingPoints to design a messaging approach built for both routine engagement and critical alerts. First, Syniverse helped optimize the 10DLC program with thoughtful campaign design, right-sized number pools, clearer opt-in and opt-out experiences, and ongoing monitoring of delivery and error trends. The goal was simple: reliable messages, consistent sender identity, and fewer disruptions for schools and families.

For time-sensitive and emergency communications, Syniverse recommended short codes, as channel carriers tend to prioritize for speed and deliverability. To keep the solution viable for a 501(c)(3), Syniverse leveraged carrier relationships to secure nonprofit exemptions for two short codes and guided TalkingPoints through verification and deployment. This created a clear operating model: use short codes for urgent alerts, and use 10DLC for everyday conversations.

The result is a messaging foundation that supports near 100 percent delivery across channels, and enables districts to send emergency alerts to all families across a school or district in seconds.

Because in education, the message is only as powerful as its ability to arrive when it is needed most.
