Syniverse NEXT Enables Open Presence in FMCA Trial
Advanced messaging hub connects major operators to demonstrate presence exchange
TAMPA, Fla. – Syniverse Technologies (NYSE: SVR) announced today that its advanced messaging hub, Syniverse NEXT, has been instrumental in the successful first phase of the Fixed-Mobile Convergence Alliance (FMCA) Messaging Open Presence Trial. The FMCA trial is focusing on providing secure presence interconnections between operators and online communities.
Syniverse, a leading provider of technology and business solutions for the global telecommunications industry, was chosen by the FMCA to participate in the trial because it has the industry’s only comprehensive advanced messaging hub.
“Syniverse NEXT is the only solution of its kind that is able to provide interoperability between disparate networks, protocols and message types,” said Tony Holcombe, President and CEO, Syniverse. “The choice of our hub architecture by the FMCA for this trial is validation of the strengths of Syniverse’s presence and messaging solutions.”
Global operators taking part in the FMCA trial include BT, KPN, Korea Telecom, NTT Communications, Telkom South Africa and Telekom Malaysia.
The first phase of the trial, which began in October 2008, was dedicated to the testing of global presence information exchange. Operators first connected to Syniverse NEXT, and then tested server interworking between operators as well as some initial interconnects with online communities.
Holcombe said that the ability to exchange subscriber presence information that indicates when users are online and available to interact is fundamental for operators.
“Not only will the heightened real-time interactivity of presence open the door for new services, such as social networking and content sharing, presence will be critical for operators to win the race for subscriber loyalty and incremental data revenue as early adopters interact in communities of common interest and develop greater ties to each others’ address books,” he said.
Presence enables subscribers to see who from their lists of personal or business contacts is online and makes it possible to identify, regardless of network or online community, the best way to reach a person, whether via mobile IM, SMS or voice.
Steve Andrews, FMCA Chairman, said customers are increasingly demanding access to new-generation converged communications services that provide the convenience and ease of use that can be found in social networks and online environments.
“This trial is an illustration of how global telecom operators, as members of the FMCA, can collaborate to break new ground in the development of global Internet services for hundreds of millions of customers,” Andrews said.
Phase two of the Open Presence trial, which should last another six to nine months, will include testing of the technical, operational and commercial models for presence-enabled services in areas such as unified communications, VoIP, mobile IM, IPTV, social networking, content sharing services and networked gaming as well as wholesale services.
